Congratulations to Peyton Fire Protection District (Peyton, CO) on being selected as the Spring/Summer 2026 recipient of David Clark Company’s Bi-Annual Volunteer Fire Department Giveaway system. The winning entry was submitted by Captain Daniel Zoorob.

From Peyton Fire Protection District’s Entry:

“We came across this opportunity while trying to find a way to equip our six-person engine with a communication system-something we’ve come to realize isn’t just helpful, but essential. Our department operates a 1996 HME engine that came with a David Clark communication system already installed. That truck has served multiple busy departments before ours, and even after all those years, the system remains one of the most valuable tools on the apparatus. It’s something you don’t fully appreciate until you no longer have it. Our newer engine, which seats six, does not have a communication system. It’s a cab-over design with the crew sitting directly over the motor, combined with multiple sirens running during response.

Inside that cab, it gets loud-loud enough that simple communication becomes a challenge. Giving directions, hearing your crew, and catching radio traffic can quickly turn into a struggle. As a volunteer department, there are times when one person may be responding alone, trying to manage everything at once-driving, navigating, monitoring the radio, operating sirens, and staying aware of surroundings. Even with a full crew, the noise and lack of clear communication create stress and increase the chance of missed information. We’ve experienced moments where radio transmissions had to be repeated, important updates were nearly missed, and conversations between crew members simply couldn’t happen when they needed to.

On our older engine, with the communication system, those problems disappear. Whether it’s one person or a full crew, everyone can hear clearly, communicate instantly, and stay connected. It reduces stress, improves coordination, and allows us to focus on what matters most-responding safely and effectively. For us, this isn’t about convenience or comfort. It’s about safety. It’s about making sure no critical message is missed and that every firefighter on that apparatus can do their job with confidence and clarity. Receiving this equipment through your giveaway would make a real and immediate difference for our department. It would directly impact how safely we respond, how effectively we operate, and how well we can serve our community. We take pride in what we do and the people we serve, and having the ability to communicate clearly-no matter the conditions-would mean everything to our crew.”
